At the Esplanade Studios, the largest recording studio in Louisiana nestled in the historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, Janelle Monáe introduced her sophomore album, The Electric Lady, to an intimate shoe-less crowd in black and white. The studio, formerly a church from the 1920s, was candle lit and warm with a patch of grass for listeners to dance on. And by dance, I mean dance with Janelle Monáe!
In her classic suit and hat, bright red lip, and petite frame, Janelle took us through a handful of songs from The Electric Lady where we full out jammed, danced, and did the Electric Slide. It was only fitting right!
The first song played was her lead single “Q.U.E.E.N” featuring Erykah Badu going into another great uptempo song, the title track “Electric Lady,” which features the newest resident of New Orleans, Solange Knowles. She shared a very inspiring track, “Victory” which comes with a great new mantra, “to be victorious, you must find glory in the little things” and the second single, “Dance Apocalyptic.”
Next we swayed to the gorgeous blend of voices from the duet with Miguel, “Primetime” and ended with a feel good, upbeat track, “What an Experience.”
At times Janelle Monáe disappeared into the small crowd as everyone danced in the grass, “all the way from Georgia.”
After getting this exclusive preview of the album, I was able to take a few minutes to ask Janelle Monáe about her upcoming release! She was beyond kind and a such sweet soul…
