If you check the charts, Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” has broken through the top 100 to no. 36, which is pretty friggin’ awesome! One, because this is a track off of a mixtape, not an album, and two, because he’s still unsigned if you ask him… In another freestyle at the House of Blues show in Chicago last night to “Say You Will/Say What’s Real” he says:
“No deal signed yet, I’m so patient/ Fuck what the blogs say but shout out to Nation.” [NahRight.com]
The charts do list a label however, and it’s listed as “Cash Money/Universal.”
Could it be that the song was recorded under the label but the artist doesn’t have to be signed? Or that the charts have to put a label and just chose that one since he’s affiliated with Young Money? I have no idea the legal workings of that… If you have a clue feel free to chime in.
I just think it’s dope that dude has a song on the charts from a damn mixtape! That’s crazy!

I don’t think he’s signed, based on what TINY bit I know. I JUST found out that everybody I know knows his manager or whatever (dude named CJ). Lil Wayne’s cousin/best friend Cortez who went to Jackson State University in MS was made head of Cash Money or something like that and put his friend CJ (the one all my friends know from the Sonic Boom band) on, starting with an internship. (I don’t know if anybody remembers this but Lil Wayne got his ass kicked once while visiting JSU, trying to hit on some guy’s girlfriend.) Lol that sounds bootlegged as hell, but it’s true. I’m trying to use that to my advantage (concert here?), but none of my friends are really pressed about it, of course. I wish i had info for you. Hell, I wish I had info for me. But anyway, keep up the Drake posts!
